Key fob, keychain, wristlet — there are a surprising number of names for such a simple little accessory. And to make things slightly more confusing, “key fob” can also mean the electronic remote used with many car keys.
At Momako Designs, key fobs are fabric loops attached to key rings, made to give your keys something easier to grab, find in a bag, or carry. They come in three sizes: Mini, Regular, and XL.
Regular and XL are designed to slip over your hand and be worn around your wrist, while Mini is intentionally smaller — just enough room to hook a few fingers through or give you something easier to spot and grab.
Which means choosing a size isn't really about small, medium, and large. It's about how you want to use it.
What does a key fob actually do?
At its simplest, it gives your keys a handle. A bare key ring isn't particularly easy to spot when it's buried at the bottom of a bag, but add a loop of fabric and there's suddenly something larger to see, feel, and grab when you're digging around for your keys.
With a wrist-sized key fob, that loop also gives you another way to carry them. Slip it over your hand and your keys can hang from your wrist when you need both hands for groceries, your phone, a drink, or whatever assortment of things you somehow managed to leave the house carrying.
But not everyone wants or needs to wear their keys around their wrist, which is where the three different sizes come in.
Mini: easier to grab and easier to find
Mini is intentionally too small to wear around your wrist. Instead, the shorter loop gives you enough room to hook a few fingers through it while also adding something more noticeable to your key ring.
If your keys tend to disappear into a tote, purse, backpack, or the depths of your car, that little bit of fabric can make them much easier to spot and grab. You also don't have a full wrist strap hanging from your keys, so Mini works well if you prefer something more compact.
You still get the fun part of choosing a print you actually like, just in a smaller package.
Regular: the classic wristlet
Regular gives you the same easy-to-find fabric loop with enough room to slip it over your hand and wear it around your wrist.
That's useful anytime you need your keys with you but don't necessarily need a whole bag. It's also nice when your hands are already occupied and you'd rather not dedicate one of them entirely to holding your keys.
And when your keys go back into your bag, the fabric loop makes them easier to find again. It's a simple addition, but if you're constantly wondering where your keys disappeared to, simple can be pretty useful.
XL: the same idea with more room
A wristlet only works if you can comfortably get your hand through it. XL has the same function as Regular but with a larger opening, giving bigger hands and wrists more room to comfortably slip it on and off.
It can also be a good choice if you simply prefer a roomier fit rather than having the key fob sit closer around your wrist.
The goal isn't for one standard size to somehow work for everybody, so Regular and XL give you the same carrying option with different amounts of room.
They can double as a bag wristlet, too
Regular and XL key fobs can also work as removable wrist straps for some bags. If a bag has a D-ring or another loop specifically meant for attaching a strap, simply clip the key fob on and you've got another way to carry it.
Where you attach it matters, though. Clipping a key fob directly onto a zipper pull can put more strain on the zipper than it was designed to handle, especially once there's some weight inside the bag. A dedicated D-ring or attachment loop is a much better place for it.
So while a key fob can give a compatible bag an easy wrist-carrying option, it's worth checking that the attachment point is actually meant to support the bag first.
So, which size should you choose?
Start with whether you actually want to wear your keys around your wrist.
If you mainly want something that makes your keys easier to grab or find in a bag, Mini keeps things compact while still giving you a fabric loop to spot or hook your fingers through.
If you want to wear your keys around your wrist or use it as a wrist strap on a compatible bag, Regular is the standard option. If you want that same function with more room for your hand or wrist, go with XL.
There's no benefit to choosing a larger size just because it's larger. The best one is simply the one that works with the way you plan to use it.
Then comes the print
Once the size question is out of the way, choosing one gets considerably more fun. Key fobs are an easy place to add a print or color you like without committing to an entire bag in it.
Go bright, floral, graphic, colorful, understated — whatever you'd be happy to see every time you reach for your keys.
That also makes them an easy little gift. Pick the size that fits how the person is likely to use it, find a print that feels like them, and you've got something practical that still feels personal.
A small thing that makes keys a little easier
Key fobs aren't complicated, and they don't need to be. Mini makes your keys easier to spot and grab, Regular adds the option of slipping them around your wrist, and XL gives you that same hands-free option with some extra room.
Regular and XL can even pull double duty as a wrist strap when a bag has the right attachment point. Whichever size works for you, it's a simple way to make your keys — and sometimes your bag — a little easier to carry, with a bit more personality along the way.
